LUTHERAN WORLD RELIEF Our LWR Fair Trade Project ensures that more of the money you spend on coffee, tea, and chocolate reaches the farmers who actually grow it. Fair Trade is a simple solution that means the difference—quite literally—between surviving and not surviving for small-scale coffee farmers. Why do we participate in the LWR Fair Trade Project? Micah 6:8 calls us, as Christians, to do justice, love mercy and walk humbly with our God. The LWR Fair Trade Project helps Lutherans answer that call by improving the lives of small-scale farmers around the world Proverbs 13:23 says, “A poor man's field may produce abundant food, but injustice sweeps it away.” Lutherans enjoy coffee as a regular part of their fellowship, unaware that the farmers who grew that coffee are probably struggling to make ends meet. By selling through Fair Trade, farmers and artisans build a better future for themselves, their families and their communities. By supporting Fair Trade, we make choices in line with our religious beliefs and affirm human dignity by promoting:
Members and friends of First Lutheran Church have supported the LWR Fair Trade project for several years. Typically, we place orders four times annually: for Christmas and Easter, when coffee, tea, and chocolate are available, and for early summer and early fall, when we receive just coffee and tea. Generally, orders close about four Sundays before Christmas and Easter and in early June and early September. Watch our bulletin and newsletter for details, or contact Jered and Elaine Hock at any time for further information, jeredandelaine@comcast.net We make no money on this project. Our “profit” is standing with fellow Lutherans and other people of good will in supporting poor third-world farmers and their families. |
